Young David Halsey had a dream to cross the vast 4,700 mile span of Canada using only primitive means: hiking and snowshoeing, driving a dogsled and canoeing. After much intense research, he and 3 companions embarked on this venture on May 4, 1977 using a route based on historic paths of trappers, traders and explorers. Four days and 45 miles later, his companions aborted their participation in the trek. With tenacity, David regrouped and on May 20th set out alone to follow his dream.

Through the Great Canadian Wilderness, prepared by Reader’s Digest, is a condensation of David’s journey based on his book Magnetic North. It is enhanced with numerous color photographs and maps.

Topics include the following:

  • An Evocation – A Land of Woods and Water
  • An Adventure – Across the Wild Continent
    • Making a Fresh Start
    • The River Strikes
    • Walking into Winter
    • Strong Medicine
    • Back on the Water
    • Onwards to James Bay
