One hundred years after the founding of San Diego, gold was discovered in the mountains 60 miles east of the city. There was feverish placer mining in the winter of 1869, & the first quartz claim was found on Washington’s birthday the following year. By summer there were a thousand prospectors swarming over the hills. According to an old story, a movement was launched to make Julian the county seat, & lost bt 2 votes. Though gold production waned after the first decade, Julian proved to be an ideal area for decidious fruit & the first orchards were planted at the height of the mining boom. Julian is the center of the magnificent mountain recreation area of San Diego county. The first Apple Day was held in 1909, the first Wildflower show opened in 1926 & is of international importance to botanists & flower lovers.

This book highlights the founding families and events of Julians first 100 years. Printed in 1969 – 64 pages – Soft bound. Condition: Good.
